Former owner:
Jan Dismas Zelenka. Inventarium 35/10. ‘P’; Psalmi varii: Magnificat No 1
Remarks:
Score copy by Zelenka. Blue-grey cover. On the identification of this composer see II/N/6/6.
Cover title (hand of Zelenka): Nro 1mo (right) | Magnificat | à 4 | C: A: T: B: | Violini 2 | Viola | e | Basso Continuo | Novari (replacing the deleted ‘Ignoti’).
At the conclusion of the score is written in Zelenka’s hand: A M D G V M OO SS H AAtqu PP R. This dedication suggest that this setting was substantially revised by Zelenka. See Dr. Landmann (SLB card catalogue, below).
This score is in Zelenka’s hand, and was copied c.1727/8. The text is in the hand of a copyist.
Two labels to correspond with Hofkirche catalogues of 1765 (damaged) and c1784 are kept with the score. The earlier fragment reads: Schranck No: II. | N. 6. Fach 12. Lag[e] | Magnificat | à 4 voc[i] | co’ VVni Viola e Basso | Partitura sola | del Sigr Novari. Incipit. The second to correspond to the entry in the missing Catalogo (c1784): Lit: N. Schranck No. II. |4. Fach 13. Lage | Magnificat | à 4 voci | co’ VVni Viola ed Org. | Partitura sola | del Sigr Novari. Incipit.
See Stockigt, ‘The Vespers Psalms of Jan Dismas Zelenka’, App. 2, No. 10.
Concordances: Although the instrumental incipit (above) for this Magnificat setting does not correspond with the vocal incipit given by Štefan for the Magnificat, this comes from Novák’s Vesperae solennes ([968] Sign. 929) once held by the Metropolitan cathedral of Prague. NB: Zelenka’s Inventarium note: ‘P’.

Eitner:
Eitner (VII, 215) lists this work among five under the name ‘Novari, . . .’: Im Archiv der Dresdner Hokkirche befinden sich in P. u. Stb. im Ms. 5 [sic] geistl. lat. Gesge. für Chor und Instrumente.
SLB Card Catalogue:
[After Dr O. Landmann]: Apart from vocal text and possibly title information ‘Magnificat|a 4.’|‘Ignot:’, the complete copy is from Zelenka as well as the final formula (‘A:M:D:G:’ etc . which is known from Zelenka’s own works. This possibly indicates a substantial reworking of the work by Zelenka. Only the title label (2nd half 18th century) is extant of the former chapel archive envelope. Formerly: Catholic court church
Status:
Score of Magnificat by Jan František Novák (Mus. 3613-E-1) held by SLUB.
